In regards to Zazzle's Newsletter.
I had no idea that the first five was the most important. All my products have tags upon tags upon tags. What a waste of time, lol.
I've always thought that the more tags the better....

OK I found it, it is in your Account/Account Settings not Notifications. I wasn't signed up, but I have never seen that there before, is that new or did I just overlook it? That should probably be in the Notifications area anyway.

I got the letter in email, yesterday. I was surprised about the number, too. I've read a lot of posts where other Zazzler's, several Pros, have said to use lots and lots of tags. Hmm.

Now I'm looking at a lot of my products, and the most important tags are not the first five. Now I feel like I need to go back and correct it. Ahhh! Lots of work. I wonder if it's important enough to go back and change...

I have read in the forums before about the first 5 tags carrying most weight, products I created before that had tags all over the place My 'product views' stats don't show much difference between the old/new way I tag my products though so I haven't gone back and changed anything as yet. Now to go and sign up for the newsletter, lol.

I got the email, also. I spent about a week correcting most of my tags because I thought from everything I've heard that it was so important. Wish I'd used that time to be creating more designs lol Oh well

It says that the first five are the MOST important and the rest are less important, so keep tagging with lots of relevant keywords, just pick the first five in the box wisely!!

Exactly polopony .. I said a long time ago on some FB group that its the first tags that are vital .. but the more relevant tags the better .. I've seen people say the more tags the better but it all depends what those tags are

Translation - don't do what I did and put the spelling errors in the first 5 tags!! That's going to be a pain to change...
Second point and missed in the lovely article - does Zazzle penalize for too many tags/keywords? Google may rank down for 20+ if it considers them irrelevant or considers the site to be keyword stuffing. It also penalizes for duplicate/repeated keywords. It would be interesting to find out whether Zazzle does the same.

I have tried to keep what I thought were the better ones from being at the end, because I know they can get cut off when you run out of space. Yes, I've run out by trying to post as many as possible, as told. Yes, I imagine it would be a lot of work to change the tags around. Geeez. I guess I'll let mine stand as they are for now. Hopefully, most of my first five are decent enough.

Wish I'd used that time to be creating more designs lol Oh well I hear that! When I first started, I had what I thought was a decent amount of tags, and some people told me that I didn't. So, I added more and more. Though the additional tags may also be of help/importance, I could have been working, like you. I've tried to put what I thought were the best ones at the start, anyway. Sometimes while in a hurry, I'd type what comes to mind and in that order, which meant some of the best started at number six. I've been telling other newbies to add lots of tags, too. I was passing along what I'd been told, but since I hadn't been told about the first five, I couldn't tell them. [sigh] Will try to tell them from now on - - We can have lots of tags, but to be sure that the first five are the most important.

poloponydesign wrote: - does Zazzle penalize for too many tags/keywords? Well, only Zazzle knows for sure, but going by my experience I'd say no. I usually fill the 500 characters allowed - can't help it, I love to brainstorm - and it doesn't seem to hurt my MP rating (although they are testing some new sorting on that now which is making for some weird results, bad time to test your tags in the MP I suspect).

personally the first five may be most important but since zazzle plays musical chairs and rearranges them when you save them - it is really just dangling the carrot without any way of reaching it to say it...

Yeah, I didn't mean to say that the rest were NOT important, I know they are still important, it's just that I never focused on the first five. But still a lot of my products don't have the first five tags as the most important.
Shopa, I never encountered dancing tags, but then again I don't pay much attention to tags once I upload the design. Interesting...
