for those of you who make templates, where do you get your photos from? stock photo sites? do you have one that you use with reasonable prices? i can't see paying $40 or so for a photo to stick in for display - i'd rather just leave it blank but then it doesn't look as nice that way.

I use my own personal photos and add a layer to them stating they are samples, etc, so they won't go with the product. I also state in the description, or subtitle, that the photos are mine.

I use http://us.fotolia.com and purchase the standard license if I'm using the photo for a placeholder. The extended RF license is required only if you're actually selling the photo/art on the product. As Gina stated, I also try and remember to mark them with 'SAMPLE' so they won't purchase them with my pic in there (which would be pretty ridiculous anyway, but just in case).

I use my own photos of family and friends, or I get photos from morguefile free of charge.

Morgue File is on the money!! Thanks for that tip. Its so annoying to have something in my head and then to find out that I don't have the photo I need for the design!

You can't use Fotolia or iStockphoto pictures on Zazzle. In their license text (hard to read and even harder to understand) they explicitly state that print-on-demand is excluded from every license.
The extended license is only valid if you print "ordinary" merchandise articles and sell them. Print-on-demand is absolutely forbidden.

You can also use BigStockPhoto.com as long as you buy one of the following licenses:

Big Stock Licensing Suggestion

We suggest something in the BSP-10x series for Shirts, Hats, Mugs, Calendars and Other Tangible Items(BSP-100S, BSP-101L or BSP-102U).

* BSP-100S (15 credits) is good for one copy of the licensed image. You must purchase a license for each copy distributed. (this one I do not suggest)

* BSP-101L (40 credits) is good for up to 5000 copies of the licensed image.

* BSP-102U (120 credits) permits unlimited copies.

Now I will also add below exactly how much moola that really comes out to.

You actually purchase "credits" in order to buy each image and license... below is the breakdown of how much each credit package is that they offer:

5 credits = $15
12 credits = $29
25 credits = $49
60 credits = $99
140 credits = $189
350 credits = $350
700 credits = $630

It is much better to create your own art rather than grab something off of a royalty free stock photo site and putting it on a product, but if you have a lil bit of your own and lil bit of theirs It would make for a nice variety on your Zazzle page for sure I think. i am still working on getting mine started so the fact that these sites are available to you is really great for getting some product up and also getting some inspiration!

Morgue File only gets you to the copyright. You still need a model release to use images of people. Regardless of source make sure that there is a signed model release on file or don't use the picture.

Another issue (after reading the license) is that the photo must be modified. You can't use images from morgue file without modification. Doesn't bother me since I modify most anyway, but may be an issue for others.

The way I understand it is that under the Standard license you may not sell anything but it can be used as display, which is what I use it for...under the extended license it states

"For clarification purposes but subject to the foregoing restrictions, it is intended that this sublicense shall permit use, reproduce, distribute or display the Work in connection with design template applications intended for resale and use, reproduce, distribute or display the Work in connection with any goods or services intended for resale or distribution, including, without limitation, mugs, t-shirts, posters, greeting cards, posters or other merchandise, and any of the foregoing in "print on demand" or tangible or electronic formats, as applicable; use, reproduce, distribute or display the Work in connection with a PR campaign aimed at the promotion of goods or services to the medias"

Am I misinterpretting what I read?

I just created an image in PhotoShop that has "Your Photo Here" in white and black on a gray background. No muss no fuss.

Maybe you could use a royalty free font that has silhouettes of people for your placeholder. Although depending on your design it might look better with photos of models... Do you have attractive relatives? Maybe you could barter with your Zazzle products for a signed model release form.

Whether looking for fonts, photos or art be sure to understand the terms being used. Many people, including many offering images, use the term "royalty free" incorrectly. A royalty is a payment per use. If there is no requirement to pay based on the number of uses then the image is "royalty free." Something can be "royalty free" and still quite expensive.
