Yesterday I was browsing an image site online, I did NOT download or try and save any of the images, I did not sign up for anything or give any information to the site what so ever. All I did was look at the images.
Then this morning I see that 3 of the pictures that I looked at are in my Zazzle image folder. A new set was created called "downloads" and the images were put there somehow. I did not create the set or download or upload any of the images.
How could that happen?

There has been several problems like that over the past year. Place like tinypic.com and others are are using a remote program to steal images off the internet and post product here and other PODs as well. what site were you on?
The best thing to do is delete the file/set and change your password. just as a precaution, also report it to Zazzle with a link to the site.

I deleted the file set and changed my password but the whole thing makes no sense. How could they make a profit by depositing images in my image folder? Even if I used them wouldn't I get the money if any of them sold?
I would understand if they were stealing my images and posting them for sale with their own account but they seem to be doing just the opposite.

http://forum.zazzle.fr/gallery/tinypic_com_and_zazzle_what_theplease read this thread. it might help to explain it better. they are using already established user accounts to "hold" their files for them. so they can't be traced, supposedly. And I wouldn't use the images for your store. you never know where they got them or if they are even legal to use. most are not, and YOU would be the one in trouble not them.

Wow, thanks for the info. How bizarre, no I would never use those images I just didn't understand how anyone could benefit by creating a program that automatically uploads images to another persons Zazzle account and if they do, how would they access them later?
Anyway I just read most of that long thread, apparently the API is still not working correctly. If you have a Zazzle account and you go clicking around on a website that uses the Zazzle API, then the images that you click on will automatically be uploaded to your Zazzle account which cannot be how it is supposed to work...so most likely not malicious just not functioning as intended.
They are saying that the API users do not have access to other parts of your account and I think that is probably correct.
What do you think?

The API users can't access your account and can't retrieve images stored there. The idea is that a user can create stuff and it gets stored in their account for their later use. It isn't bad in concept, it is just that some people have implemented the API in a way that encourages copyright infringement. The way it is supposed to work is something like this: on an external site I might provide a selection of frame - the user chooses a frame, and I might offer a selection of backgrounds - the user chooses the background, then the user is invited to upload a photo - their family, their dog ... whatever. Click done and a final image is created. This is uploaded to their zazzle account where they, and only they, can use it to create products for themselves. Usually it is implemented with a bunch of products being created at the time. That keeps the image private to the creator, which is much better than having it saved to the providers control.

Interesting. But what is the point of implementing the API then? If I used the API on a website and the images went into the users Zazzle account then how would I make money?

If you go to my shop right now and pick a product and customize it, it goes into your account. If you buy it I get the markup. The API works the same way, plus carrying the referral code. You might want to test whether you can create products for sale using those images. I'd do it but I haven't found a site I can test it out on. I know in the testing I did do that the "post for sale" link shows, I just can't select it. But I don't have a "downloads" folder to test that part.

Oh darn, I already deleted the images so I don't know if I could have made products with them or not. I'm guessing I could because they were not just in my account they were actually in my images folder where I upload my own images...which is why I was worried because only I should have access to that part of my account.
That's also why I don't understand how API users make money. If the image goes into my images folder and I make a product with that image and then purchase it then I should get the markup because at that point it would be a product from my own store. hmmmm
